Developer, county want FBI headquarters at Potomac Shores

A development in eastern Prince William County is making its case to serve as the site for the new FBI Headquarters.

Suncal and Prince William County submitted a joint response to the General Services Administration to recommend SunCal’s Potomac Shores development as “the ideal location for a consolidated FBI campus,” according to a news release from SunCal.

In December, the GSA issued as request for information seeking options for a new FBI headquarters building.

The agency wants to replace its “outdated and overcrowded J. Edgar Hoover Building,” a 2.4-million-square-foot facility on Pennsylvania Avenue in Northwest Washington, GSA officials said in a news release.

Potomac Shores, formerly called Harbor Station, is a planned mixed-use development on U.S. 1 in Woodbridge. The development is planned to have 371 homes, a Virginia Railway Express station, a five-star hotel and conference center, commercial and office space, a marina, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, fitness centers and public parks, according to SunCal’s news release.

Prince William County “is fully supportive of the Potomac Shores development and in bringing the FBI to Potomac Shores,” SunCal officials said.

SunCal says the Potomac Shores site would be a good one for the FBI because of its proximity to Interstate 95, to Quantico and to Manassas Regional Airport.

In their response, SunCal and Prince William County gave three design options for an FBI headquarters at Potomac Shores and SunCal stated that it may be willing to contribute the land to the FBI at no cost, officials said.

The deadline for developers and other interested parties to respond to the GSA was Monday. The agency has not yet released details about the responses it received.
